21 Gun Salute

By ColorMeToxic

The American  Flag was removed from the box
that housed the young man's dead body.

It was folded neatly and tucked into plastic,
meant only to preserve this bad memory.

The first handful of dirt
was tossed down into the rectangular hole.

21 gun shots ring out...pin-drop silence.
His widow, she weeps...

for her future...
without him.

The national conscience has become numb to this senseless slaughter, may it soon be over. Thanks for the reminder, much appreciated.
