Flying Fish

By Alchemist

Fish aren't especially smart creatures
So to say that a fish is extremely intelligent isn't saying much
But this fish was extraordinarily brainy
One day he decided the ongoings of his school
And for that matter other fish in general wasn't that interesting
So he made his way to the surface right around the middle of the pond
And listened to the ducks quack but that quickly became very dull
Squawk, squawk, squawk, ugly duckling, "quite boring" he thought
By that evening he had moved onto the wooded side of the pond
He waited until night and listened to the owls
All twilight they just had questions and no answers
He had a few thoughts to himself after that “some wise birds they are”!
And how strange the statement "this is for the birds" is
The next morning he was waiting for the first hook to hit the water
Before the sun even rose old men were out fishing on the sandy side of the pond
But he knew better than to try and get breakfast from that easy prey
Still he found humans very intriguing, they pondered on things like he did
And wandered around like he wished he could
Though they had a schedule like any other animal
When the fishermen left in the late morning
The children would play from then until the afternoon
And when the sun started to set the young adults would stroll down with their lover
Wave their feet in the water and tell each other how they would be together forever
And recite poetry about how their lives together was as bright as the clear blue sky
So after many moons listening to all this talk of the sky and the stars
The fish choose to poke it's gills up out of the water
Witnessing the true hues of the open air
Right then a hawk spotted the very delicious meal that he had been hunting for days
The hawk swooped down and his talons swiftly clasped around the fish's scales
The fish's first response was “aaawwwww, that hurts”!
The hawk was shocked to realize he could understand the fish
And the hawk being much more wise than the owls
Had an idea and said to the fish “how about I let you go in return for a favor”
The fish so enthralled with the view didn't even hear the question
So the hawk continued and said “if you lure fish to me I will let you live”
The fish still only half listening got the clever point the hawk was trying to make
His life in exchange for many meals in the future but the fish
Was so enamored with the picturesque landscape and wind through his fins
He simply responded to the hawks bargain with “no thanks, I'll just enjoy the view”!

To enjoy the moment is the ultimate moral but a few other ones could be to cherish what you have before it's gone and you only truly live when you think you're dying.
