I Do Not Write Poetry For Poets
By shadowsinthelight
I write for the women I love
I write for dogs in heaven above
I write for friends who don't appreciate
I write for the naked woman on the stage
But I do not write poetry for poets
I write for the couple walking down the aisle
I write for the girl who died for a life-style
I write for the passion of love and hate
I write for the traffic that made me late
But I do not write poetry for poets
I write for those who've passed away
I write for rainbows and cloudy days
I write for God, Satan and eternity
I write for the hopelessly lonely
But I do not write poetry for poets
I write for the sheer need to write
I write when I cannot sleep at night
I write mostly for myself
For everyone and everything else
But I do not write poetry for the poets

How true, there are countless reasons to write and countless people to share it with. But more important than all of that, is your own personal reasons for writing, if you have any at all. Outstanding write.

This poem makes me think, isn't everybody a poet, whether they write or not? I love the romance of your verse.

very good write. if people understood that just because we are poets and write poetry, we don't write for poets, but rather we express and write for others, for people, or ourselvs, or simply nothing, i think that there would be less criticism and arrogance. all in all, a wonderfull, moveing and inspiering peice. :)

Thanks for summing up how I feel in so many words. If someone else enjoys what I write, it is merely a by-product of the telling, not the purpose of the actual story. Well said.

for if all poets wrote for poets, there would be no room left for originality

I have no idea why I like this so much, but I do. Actually, I do know why. It reminds me of something Leonard Cohen might have written. You know what, don't ever write poetry for poets, they're (we're?) all too fucking left-brained about it.
