The Thing About Guilt.

By Echoes of Orpheus

It always seems to hurt more
than the damage you caused

and fades as fast as mountains weather.

Guilt and blame are 6 times divorced
and it's impossible sometimes
to determine if the guilt is
deserved or not.

Other times you just know.
You know you made a mistake
and it feels like pressure is pressing
your every thought

and all of them eventually condense
back into the memory of what you did,
what it is you regret.

It could have been physical,
insensitive,

but often is as simple
as a few words
that slipped

across your tongue without a thought.

Then there are those regrets,
the ones you know will follow you to the grave
though likely not attend your funeral...

The ones where you watch the thing you loved most
slip away from you
as the words did.
Though neither would ever be forgotten.

Some give up and try to forget
others are incapable,
and spend their lives
unable to let go.

The thing about guilt
is that as our bodies age
it kills us inside, as time kills us out

so that in the end
they die together.

but for that one in a million chance,
to some,
the pain is worth it
and they would do anything
to fix what they had done.

I,
would do anything.

The thing about guilt and regret is that we learn or perhaps are shaped by it. Ive had my share but I believe everything happens for a reason...good or bad...and regrets shouldn't hold us just mold us for our next step... ok enough of my 2 cents that doesn't add up to much...Who hasn't known this? yet I believe no one could express it as perfect as you do...

This really makes guilt a good thing, in the grand scheme of things. I mean perhaps it is guilt and the negative aspects of our experience that make the good and life... life. I realize that sounds funny but that's how it is flowing out of me. Great work by the way. This piece has a very positive effect on me. ~matt

An exceptional piece. Very well captured. Kudos.

  • A former member wrote: such thoughtful considerations....a meditation upon guilt, penetrating, pensive, recollecting... this dwells deep in the recesses of that which threatens the strength of will needed to stand firm amid the cyclonic decisions necessitated by living. As I see it, we are but infinitesimal specks of stardust blinking for an instant during an infinitely expanding cosmic energy cycle... a moving and accurate contemplation; the very reasons prefer to avoid guilt altogether.

I was thinking something along one of those lines... "...watch the thing you loved most / slip away from you" You seem to have put me back to square one though. Excellent words stirring less favorable images, as vividly as most unwanted things do. But I won't drudge on about what this meant to me, you're beginning to move beyond your typical writing here. Capital stuff sir, I look forward to more. *tips hat*

Still to this day, and then some, past, present, (please never future) there are things that I've done that will never leave, never diminish in contemptibiliy, these undeserved acts should be a constant reminder to me; I needed these words from you tonite. Thank you. ~b

If I were to finish that sentence on my behalf, "honored yet again." I'm seeing new people feeling what I have to say these days. I wish I didn't understand this feeling, but I guess I had to learn.
