An Old Campfire Poem
By lupus tenebrae
There you were, some craven
nightlight in the dark,
some distant ember I'd
seen tremble in the wind,
a paper lantern all aflutter
with the slightest touch
or lonely wisp caught
vanishing again.
You were a fox-tail, frilled
and ready to escape,
a robin's breast content
to sing its fond farewell,
a coming dawn retreating
at the close of day,
an old campfire, with
no stories left to tell.
