The Mad Hatters' Society

By Malcholm Dark

I am a lunatic, an idiot, I am numb as a post
My brain has burnt out like bread is to toast.
I am no harm to others nor to my own constitution
Yet they committed me here in a state institution.
I burned out on life, so I withdrew to be free
Now my world is only what my mind is able to see.
My imaginary friends know me and they do understand
The wizard of insensibility, and to that I am grand.

--It is almost like heaven to be the State's fool
I see things, I know things and I feel no pain.
--Just watch as I sit here in my corner and drool
I am the Mad Hatter, in a society for the insane.

There are many like me, our lives lay in tatters
Yet we sit and take tea...
                          we are the Mad Hatters!

One lump or two? Insanity is a very desirable quality for a poet and institutions are rife with inspiring characters.

  • A former member wrote: Very cute. I usually don't like rhyming poems with so few stanzas, but yours is just long enough to flesh out your thoughts while ending on a great note. "The Mad Hatters' Society" is an interesting concept in and of itself and reflects strongly on the nihilistic dilemma.

This's hella cool. Didja know the phrase mad as a hatter came about because hatters used to use mercury to make hats and a symptom of mercury poisoning is madness.

I found this to be refreshing. I feel like the fool in my circles, generally speaking. Though in reality I would say it's all about perspective. I think most everyone else is the fool. *shrug* Enjoyable read :)

This was amazing, and I enjoyed the line, "My brain has burnt out like bread is to toast." That made me laugh. Great write, and this is the definition of a mad hatter, thanks. Scholar
