Wisdom of the Youth (villanelle)

By dwells

I seek the Wisdom of the Youth
I heard it mentioned in a song
My manners frayed, my speech uncouth

That rarest gem of treasured truth
An outcast where I don’t belong
I seek the Wisdom of the Youth

A silken rag holds my last tooth
My days grow short, the way is long
My manners frayed, my speech uncouth

A darkened bar, a private booth
I wonder now where I went wrong?
I seek the Wisdom of the Youth

My fortune spent, I drink vermouth
A place of refuge from the throng
My manners frayed, my speech uncouth

And years from now they’ll say “Forsooth!”
“Fool’s errand to unring the gong!”
I seek the Wisdom of the Youth
My manners frayed, my speech uncouth

So exactly what is the wisdom of the youth? And the only interesting dichotomy that I see within this tome, is that you question where you went wrong. While this piece has hilarity, could it not be possible that the journey to seek the wisdom; much as the quest for the Holy Grail, was indeed the wrong turn of time invested in that life? Just mixed nuts for thought my friend! Loved it!

to seek such a thing these days is a quest not to be taken by the weary. steadfast in this endeavor my friend!

  • A former member wrote: It almost seems like an oxymoron but I get your point. It would be much easier if could go back to the time of our innocence.

AR, BA, and Crag - glad you enjoyed this satirical piece; notice I never said what the wisdom was? - Dan
