Goldfinches and Reapers

By lupus tenebrae

The idle chatter of reapers
and the goldfinch between them
fills the coming of evening.

Comparing and contrasting
their feathers and gauze
while walking sticks are motionless,

playing red-light-green-light
in between breezes, in between
a starving poet's glances.

It's a trick of a treat, it seems,
an inanimate in-joke
making a lonely heart smile.
