the Princess and the Impaler (vacation memories)
By TropicalSnowstorm
I came to see Dracula and Andreea...
well, one out of two isn't bad, especially
since I'd rather see her in a swimsuit
and my, what big eyes she has...
The best way to see Romania is in a Dacia,
'cause the old ones are made poorly, but easy to fix.
Tomorrow, Serban and I will harvest this town for a
deal and maybe we'll even burn it when the trip's through.
A few days will find us misdirected in the country
with a farmer trying to tell us the way to a town,
or exploring an old fortress of Vlad the Impaler
and the locals will try admirably not to roll their eyes.
Tonight there's laughter and chatter with old music
for the dance floor (while she still spins the magic like
two years ago) and they hate the Russians, but like singing
their music, so they throw on a song after Depeche Mode.
Someone has heard they will pay you to wash
corpses in Sweden enough to live for a year
and Andreea, who's hung up on being a Cancer,
now gets paid to subtitle American fishing shows.
Everyone's got an angle and they've all got a dream
that ends with a payout or a trip somewhere else,
but I'm happy to be here 'cause for me this banter
is as priceless as anything I'll see on the road.
...and no cobble stoned path will ever take me to a
place as beautiful as the swing-set in the town of Beius,
where later me and the Princess try to reach our toes to
the stars, while we talk around half of the reason I'm here.

I love this. I love the colorful details and subtly wry language. Full of coiled, cautiously circumnavigated longing, too, which is always a good thing. Great mix of tension and enchantment.

Your travels are indeed impressive and envious...but to anyone else who had simply heard you had gone, they would only be "international trips" for which the thought left a faint and fast extinguishing whimsy on the tip of the brain. It's the hand, the skill...but more then that it's the vision you write with that, melts my thoughts to a dreamy world just real enough to forget the dream part. Your going to have one hell of a collection of stories for your memoirs...and a crazy talent for writing them.

I love this. Ness definately hit the nail on the head. This IS way cool. I envy you your travels. They say, write what you know. Sometimes I feel a bit stunted for having never left the states, which is something that will hopefully change over the next few months. Anyway, I really did enjoy this whole thing. Excellent job.
