When There's No Light

By lupus tenebrae

One by one, the streetlights
flicker, then die

as a lone willow bends
in disheveled ways

and a stray cat bemoans
its solitude, pleading

for a warm bed and
an open heart.

I sigh in resignation, then return
my crestfallen vision

to the cosmos, hoping
that somewhere, someone

is looking in my
direction.

Wander and wonder on. It's this strange mythology of self that keeps us alive and seeking. An honest and beautiful work.
