Metal Detector

By lupus tenebrae

I looked for the crossbones of treasure in hiding
and found the graffiti of what once laid there.

I looked for the promise I slipped on your finger
and found that, in dreaming, its facets were gone.

I looked for the sleep sand that fastened my eyelids
and realized its magic was never enough

to gain back the hours I lost over searching
and sifting through ashes and seashells...for us.
