once upon a time...

By ebonyamore

when I was eight and he was nine
we shared the sweetest of first kisses
i was the princess.
he wielded a sword better than any knight in any realm
known by man.
on the kind of balmy june afternoon that begs for adventure, bathed in sunlight and
perfumed with lilac scented promise, he rescued me.
from a dragon-dog guarded tree castle where he promised to love me
for as long as a nine year old is able.

the next time we kissed was in that same treehouse, sold by the princess to an alien tribe.
i was the alien commander. he was a human freedom fighter.
no love lost between those two but what can i say?
sometimes intergalactic passions run deep. and i learned that some kisses are promises. others are exclamation points on the endcaps of frustration, irritation and lust. they may not be as sweet but they're thrilling and theytaste great in their own right. sorta like cinnamon and licorice and cold late-spring eveningtime air.

for a summer we were kissing buddies, the best kind of young lovers. restless souls who wandered the world in two big backyards, conjuring enemies to fight and big loves to experience in each other. it was great.

until
the one battle that was his and not mine. the dark and unfair villain who came and stole my knight away. one little tumor. and my prince was slain. When I was eight. And he was nine.

I like the fantasy elements. This took imagination and deep thinking to write. Good stuff. :)

I'm so deeply lost in words right now. Your heart and mind painted a breathtaking scene of young hopeless romantics. Your words cling tight to me and I shall cherish every bit of them, such a beautiful disaster. Bows- Scholar

  • A former member wrote: Sometimes, it seems sullying an amazingly beautiful piece such as this with my humble and unprofessiona comments about the impression it had on me would be a crime. But, I can no longer resist sharing with you the visions these words created in my mind. I couldn't help but recall the novel "Bridge to Tarabithia' by Katherine Paterson and the movie My Girl. This piece definitely is on par with, even better than IMO, both of those emotional works of art as well.

This brings back some fond old memories of when love seemed genuine and forever wasn't so over-whelmingly frightening. You made me smile, I appreciate that.

I love that you didn't toss unneeded wordiness about it or over metaphoring it..I think the general straightforward simplistics add so much for this. It just ran straight and true; There isn't much I can say to critisize this. Bravo

The ìnnocence makes it hurt that much more...(and i learned that some kisses are promises) I love this image, it really does paint 1000 words. Look forward to reading more :-)

  • A former member wrote: Horribly tragic...I only wish beauty such as this lasted longer. Mere words do not seem quite adequate. I am deeply touched, and I hope to see more of you around here.

  • A former member wrote: this made me cry at the end...no lie. this is so sweet and innocent. i love it
