Ambient noise in Joplin, the new normal.

By Rachel

Heavy is the hand that holds this poison pen
and I wonder if I can even bring myself to write this out.
Where would I begin?

        The sound?
(ten thousand freight trains on top of us
            all at once
punctuated by screams and breaking glass.)

    Or

        The smell?
           (natural gas and electrocution
                dust and death.)

No.
I'll start at the end
where I say I'm just happy to be alive
        but not mean it.
Because really, that isn't it at all.

There's a term for this.

    They call it
        Survivor's Guilt.

    I call it
I can't walk out of my house without
        witnessing destruction.
        I live in a war-zone, documented by
X's and O's spray painted on the remnants
of what once was my neighborhood
        next to numbers advertising
        how many bodies lie within.

    And why not me?
What did I do to deserve life
and how can I live up to it?

So call it what you will
but the fact of the matter is
I can't drive down the street
without tears in my eyes.

People with cameras throw around "Rebuilding" metaphors
like dirty bills at a strip club
        then disappear back to their
            in tact towns
                to forget what they've seen.

    There is no rebuilding.
There will be no "return to normalcy."
There is only debris and broken dreams
as the death toll climbs each day.

Sirens and chainsaws
    are ambient noise.
        This is the new normal.

      Pray for my town -
            no hope lies here anymore.

I was only living a few miles away. It missed us. Though when i was a child i had my home ripped away wizard of oz style. Your description here is precise and accurate, and much more beautiful than i could have described it.

Man, my heart goes out to you for experiencing this. I've only known this kind of devastation on a smaller scale.. we've been pretty fortunate with the hurricanes... but every year we wait for our turn.

We have... adapted. Things will never be the same as they were before the tornado, but we're getting by. The sense of community is wonderful here. Everyone pulls together to help each other and it's pretty magnificent to see. You can't throw a stone without hitting a construction worker. :) A windy day or a thunderstorm are all it takes to incite fear and panic everywhere and I think it will be many years before that goes away, but over all we're getting by. Thanks for asking. :)

Rachel I love this. My instant thought actually went to the 7/7 terrorist attacks on the London underground of about 6 years ago, for some reason.. you've written this in such a way that it's relateable for so many of us I think.. really, I got something from reading this. And it's important, which I envy. I don't seem to be able to write about important things. well done :)

This was written brilliantly, like a poetic journal entry. Truthful and honest, you made me feel so lucky to have a roof over my head and fresh, clean clothes to wear day in/day out. Sharp focused piece.

Well expressed. I hope you are proven wrong and that things do turn around faster than you expect. I think that in that situation I would be compelled to get to work helping clean up just to avoid the despair of inaction. Though even that would seem like a sisyphean task at first, it's all that we can do. Scholar
