herb

By Jonas

he gave me a ride on a day too hot for
walking
been in town since before the day
in the year
i was born

his wife she died in '88
and he still wears the ring

and every day he wakes is just another day
and every day he wakes it's just his neighborhood
and every day he wakes he keeps busy helping his nephew take care of the yard

his hand rests on the wheel as he keeps me engaged in idle conversation
and the finger that holds his pledge is swollen around the gold
