Drums Across Time II (villanelle)
By dwells
The strongest tribe will take the biggest cave
“Injustice!” – did the lesser tribes exclaim
The heart remembers what the minds forgave
Primordial, Man’s penchant to enslave
Injustice – all through history, the same
The strongest tribe will take the biggest cave
The wealth of kings, the kingdom cannot save
Injustice – how the swain invokes your name
The heart remembers what the minds forgave
Excuse the bad behavior of the knave
Injustice – angry cudgel meant to shame
Aggrieved; no compensating what he gave
The anarchy of guillotine and glaive
Injustice – does the peasant breast inflame
No good intentions live beyond the grave
Infernal drum whose beat will soon deprave
Injustice – never contemplates the blame
The strongest tribe will take the biggest cave
The heart remembers what the minds forgave

Simply masterful. "We didn't start the fire...." You're still the best at what you do and still one of my top favorites, man. Thanks for sharing this.

the truly enlightened can inform, chasten, embrace, and refute in a single stanza. you've taken us into deep waters my friend, and like the Rorschach this leaves something for everyone in the shape their own mind provides. bravo!
