Ankle Swingers

By Stephanie Sideways

Allow for time to fall behind its pace.
My son will not forever be this small.
Another pair of trousers hang too high
Another summer term is almost through

Last night you couldn't find your way to sleep
Was it because your daddy was away?
I offered you the left side of the bed
Yet you declined and snuggled close to me.

I crooked my arm, resistant of its weight
And I forgave your lack of etiquette
I fought for covers, up until the light
I puzzled at the space your body ate

But look how tall you stand above the ground
I hardly have to bend to kiss your hair
I cherish every new grown inch and pound
My pride grows past that measure, year on year.
