Spider Season

By Stephanie Sideways

When summer brings its
Humid air
we open windows everywhere
The spiders, seeing their invite
excitedly, creep in at night.

Arachnids love this season most
as we play the unwilling host.
I wish they'd hide, stay out of sight
not scurry 'cross the boards at night.

A movement in periphery
makes my heart race viscerally .
I'm quick to make my feet retract
for fear of them is not an act.

**************************

Perhaps we shouldn't be so hard
on keepers of the fly graveyard
I have one up upon a shelf.
I never see him, he is stealth.

I often have to use a Hoover
just as a dead fly remover
He kills wasps too, he's that hardcore.
(As creatures, I hate them much more)

As long as he stays out of sight
to let him live? I think I might!
They bring out an irrational fear
but I'm thankful for the flies they clear.

After all, some spiders might bite humans and some are even deadly. I kill them with the vacuum cleaner to make sure they are dead and won't come back... It affects me very deeply when I have a close encounter with one of those horrible creatures. Hours later I find myself still frightened to death, unable to function - fearfully looking around the corners of my room in hope there are no more spiders in there... I've once had a spider large as my open hand, all black and fat and utterly disgusting, walking on the wall of my living room in a flat where I lived, in a block literally infested with all species of spiders and other arachnides - but this one was completely unlike our usual European spiders. I've never seen anything like that before. It could have been a black widow or tarantula, or heaven knows what - and it could have been really dangerous. It could have somehow escaped from someone's home through an open window - as some people keep poisonous spiders as pets... It was nearly midnight and I was alone at home. That's better because if there was someone at home that time, they would not be even a bit understanding of my phobia... ;/- I took the hoover and I sucked the creature in, holding it on for 5 minutes to make sure it is killed, for such a big spider was surely difficult to kill - and I know that the smallest of them can still be alive and walking even after being slapped with a slipper... ;/- When the job was done, I felt better but I still was horribly terrified and for long hours I couldn't stop thinking about this, afraid to go to sleep so that no spider dares to bother me again... ;/- Now, I find myself fighting a strike of ants which I don't know where they even came from - my room is not a place where a plague of ants could be a problem. It's not because of no spiders - there are many at home but I live in another place now. I kill every spider that stands on my way - they know well: if they want to survive, they better stay away or they will be immediately exterminated for the sake of my peace and safety. Yep! That is, my mental integrity, hahaha! ;)-

Phobia's are irrational, if I lived in a country where the likelihood of coming face to face with a deadly spider or any dangerous insect, I would keeps the windows closed, plugs in the sink and toilet lid down ( check) and this is probably a fear that has passed down throughout generations because our ancestors soon learnt that the little buggers could kill. When many are harmless, the big fat mother fuckers who won't bat one of their eight eyelids about biting you, we'll they just give the helpful ones a bad name, really! Still, I would rather not share my bed or bathroom with one , for sure! X x x x

This is definitely one for the ages! Recommend viewing "Arachnophobia" - one of my favorite movies from about 15 years ago. I too dislike the 8-legged creepy-crawlies. Got a painless (pretty much) but nasty bite from a brown recluse some years back. Well done on this one lady; a joy to read, thanks!
