The dragon.flies

By Narcissa

It was always her wings that bothered me
Too often when he spoke of her
I could see their sheer beauty
Flapping in his recent memory

Looking down at my own
I didn't even have feathers to rustle

He said he liked my scales
They played music when I stretched
But I was just reaching for him
Normally I wouldn't move
But when he appeared
The fire in me stirred
He said I was just showing off
Torching trees and villages
Then he'd laugh and settle against my snout
He'd start talking about her
How small she was
How pretty she was when she pollinated the flowers
I'd growl
And he'd laugh

I knew what I was to him
I made him feel strong and confident
And maybe a little loved

She would live for a few days then die
Then there would be another on his mind
And on his tongue

One day I told him to leave me alone
One day he told me I wasn't as ugly as I thought I was.
...But he was only talking to himself...
Beautiful or not
Everything with wings eventually flies away

a lovely little story you've crafted here.
