the reason I quit drinking anywhere else but home
By Sketso
His thoughts wander, just the same
as any other man with no name,
and in the heat of the moment,
he likes to think there's no shame.
it's a simple proposal, really...
"Can I buy you a drink?"
Ahh, but for the mere moments
of a couple, coupling,
for a couple of hours...
or less
what in this senseless act,
that awakens all the senses,
would rebuild his self esteem?
he doesn't know, but he craves it...
maybe it's just been too long
since he looked for that look
of longing in someone else's eyes?
a king in his castle,
hoping for a pauper's fare...
it wouldn't be fair
sudden tears roll down a broken face,
trailing nicotene stains
through cracks in granite
even though he doesn't smoke
"Forget I said that... would ya?"
and don't look down
on a broken man held together
by nothing more than a lick
and a promise
for you'll see he's building his tower anew,
at the thought of you, and the promise
that licks like the flames in your eyes
"I never should have come to this bar," he thinks,
"but I've already gone too far...."
rebuilt esteem, now shattered
as he makes his excuses
and flees the scene
before he is seen
to be less of a knight
(just one night!)
than he's built himself to be

Touching piece. Everything must be taken in stride. Of course. But I did really enjoy it. ^*_*^

A work about the vulnerability and isolation of a man who feels incomparable to others . . . I love it, naturally. "he's building his tower anew at the thought of you / built himself to be" . . . These lines are great- they really represent how perception dictates our reality.

Ugh, this made me feel ill, only because I find it so relatable. The shameful feeling that comes with emotions not meant to be bared and behaviors/events not meant to happen is excruciating and you depicted it well here. Thanks for sharing.

The scene is vivid and wise, and finding that something in someone else's eyes can be a deep set compromise :)~ I really like it, Sketso :)~
