Cornfield Effect
By Mistress Morbid
And there I stood in the middle
of a cornfield, not knowing how
I arrived to this point of confusion
but sure enough staring right at it
I take off, running frantically
thrashing the corn out of the way
as I barrel through the stalks
panting, heart racing like a horse
I am lost, I look around in a daze
everything looks the same
haven't I been here before?
I pick a direction and run
Again I am waving my arms
pushing the corn stalks out
of my way, leaving a dust veil behind
running out of breath
Just before all of this I
was running around in here
giggling and screaming in joy
not a care in the world, just having fun
Funny how things change quickly
for the worse, and least pleasant
feeling a bit dazed and confused
disoriented, and full of doubt
Thrashing through the corn I did go
my arms wildly whacking the stalk aside
looking around hoping to find the way
the way out of this nightmare
I stumble cross a scarecrow
I look up at the tall stuffed dummy
dark were its features and scary
was is its purpose, screams could be heard
Turning to run the other direction
I stop, turnaround, and stare at it
not so scary after all, besides it
is a stuffed piece of cloth sewn together
I walk up to it and look up
no, you don't scare me at all
and content with the discovery I made
I start to climb the wooden pole holding it
Finally reaching the top, seeing beyond
beyond the corn stalks and to the barn
bright as day, did that house shine with pride
I climb down and dart for that direction
Reaching the corn's edge and just
to the side of the dirt road
I turn around and stare at the crop
Oh how mysterious and suspenseful
Standing, thinking for a moment
lost in a daydream of adventure
I run back into the field, thrashing
to once again feel the cornfield effect

so compelling and brilliant in its imagery metaphor, as if trapped in a maze of life, but so vivid this was the images really come alive ,a gripping imaginative write

At school...sitting in english class...I realized that the second jeepers creepers happened to have a scene from the corn field, but this came from me playing in the corn as a kid at my grandmother's house in Illinois.

This was wonderfully done. I was completely drawn into the page while reading this. The confusion, the angst, the emotions were all palpable.

What a fun scamper through the stalks. How interesting our minds... can turn nature's field into a haunted house of sorts then back again. Great work! :::OLd

Wow, this was so, so vivid. I could the whole thing in my mind's eye. The constant cycle of confusion, feeling lost and facing your fears only to delve back into the trap again. stunning and emotive, Morb, I love it. -L
