The Things we lose... The Things We Gain...
By worm
a personal
perspective on turning 70...
looking back
on all of it, it was mostly not worth it...
the loves, the hates, everything that seems to consume us
as we move, inexorbably sliding down the ladder of life
until we find ourselves totally immersed in the sludge
we thought we had left behind when we were younger
and in control of our own destinies...
control... what a laugh!
with age comes the realization that we control nothing...
no one gets out unscathed...
no one reaps any reward...
the pain we have caused will be paid for in spades!
it's only the little victories ever really count...
the small things that are done, behind the scenes
the things no one ever sees
the ones no one pats you on the back for
these are the only acts that really count...
to laugh at anothers misfortunes
to think we are so much better off then they are
is the most unfortunate thing of all!
it hardens our hearts...
it bruises our souls...
it deletes our humanity...
it comes to everyone of us...
this season of needing to be forgiven
for all the vile wretchedness we overfed and maintained
all in the name of winning...
in the end, as we are lying in emotional grief
waiting for the final curtain of this life to fall
be prepared for the enorimity of your actions
to be the final thoughts you have
as you are forced to stand
and account for your life...
good luck!

Wow! Lots of wisdom in this piece... I am in my 50's now and I am starting to feel this too - things not done, realizing there isn't another 20 years to throw away on something poorly planned and executed, looking at the ages of the people in obituaries... There is definitely a need to focus on what I want to be known for by my children after I am gone. The piece about what my final thoughts are likely to be is also sobering. Time is short, precious, and unbankable! ...and things said and done can never actually be undone. Thank yu for the reminder, dear Worm! Ciao, T/S
