Run Away: Welcome to [North Carolina]

By Deathkitten

Abandoned house
Once more I stand
at broken doors
Bent & off it's hinges
waiting to be fixed
or replaced
I lift & shove
Sliding through with ease
Afraid to touch
the dusty
dirtied
web-covered
walls
Spotted with mold
or is it mildew?
It's hard to tell
but I hate the smell
If I close my eyes
to torture myself
I remember
listening to the screams
through broken china
& busted glass
Flash backs
of attacks
Punches
The bruising
on the arm
neck or face
& switches streaking
bare legs
imperfect skin
Doesn't matter where or when
Then running
to my bedroom
like I did
all the other "homes"
in North Carolina
Where incest is
as well here
as West VA
It scars & forms us
to their dismay
& they wonder why
we pack our bags
& run away

  • A former member wrote: "If I close my eyes to torture myself" That line really struck a chord, in this excellent piece those two lines stick out to me, certainly is a lot of meaning in those words with which I can relate to. In the end I don't really think it would help if people understood, it wouldn't really change much. Or maybe that's the cynic in me. A really good write DK.

A dark tale indeed... Are there still states where incest is legal? In Canada it's illegal everywhere... Thanks for sharing.. xoxo

Not that i'm aware of. It's not legal, but happens all the same. It was a personal statement. Thanks for reading :)

When i first got to this site i had never released my demons and once i got started it took almost a year before i found myself sharing things that were so personal. i see the same in you. it went from one world to another. we are getting to see the human in you as they said to me. and this makes me feel like i'm not the only one that will open myself up in this way. thank you . and i thought incest was only legal in oklahoma. where they stop selling liquor at 10pm and none on sundays. and i had been blaming it on the alcohol for years til i went back to visit and couldn't buy any. =). much love. I've been on here for 7 months now & I think I have always been open with my writing. Alot of my older ones I have deleted in order to write what I have recently. Possibly 20 or more to be honest, but it has gotten a bit more intense, I think & of course you knowing me on a more personal level, you have found we share a few things in common. Writing of it helps release those things...to set them free, even if it's temporarily & it tells a story that people can either relate to or come to understand about the individual & sometimes inspire others or atleast let them know they are not alone & I love that. Thank you for reading, beautiful. Mwah! Love you

Never thought of it that way, but the twangy accent works in both venues (HA!) - strongly stated Jess, well done in a sorrowful reflection, cheers!

Um hah this little NC chick isn't "twangy". You can ask Todd & Kimmy. Not all of us have the accent. It varies haha I just got lucky, I guess. Thanks :)

You do share some genetic makeup possibly with Loretta Lynn? (of Coal Miner's Daughter fame) aka Mrs. Johnny Cash. Maybe just the screen pic Jess, but more sultry. Now I'll just go away quietly, cheers!

I don't think I favor any famous person. I have been told Elizabeth Taylor & I just don't see it. Neither in Loretta *smh* I'm not sure how to take that comment, but atleast I know what "sultry" means ;)

man jess, if I could take it all away I would burn down every fucking memory that exists in your pain. a great poem loaded with some very traumatic examples of what the mind does not discard. these things are really tragic and you nailed it square on the head. the details in the senses, you cant make that shit up. I would smell things and take lifelong notice and be reminded of such horror every time I thought of it, the smell and taste of it. really sad that this happens and you captured it so well, your a great poet with a detailed mind. what more could you ask for. awesome jess!

There are many things i'd definitely like to wipe out of my memory. I think the drugs have blurred a small bit of it. Thank you for the compliment & taking your time to read & understand :)

I was right beside you in that filthy house of pain, now rotten and decrepit ! This is a very visually satisfying write. And I love how you evoke the senses of smell along with the stinging pain. :)~Very talented, indeed. !!
