the untidiness handbook

the untidiness handbook

Don’t come into my house expecting to find order.
My dwelling is almost an obstacle course. Books
languor on the coffee table, on end tables, one or
two on the nightstand in the bedroom. Those in
the bookcase standing like soldiers at ease, some
leaning on others like drunken companions.

In packing boxes and plastic cases, in various rooms,
are record albums, 33 1/3 rpm. (Does anyone else still have
these?) Modern technology demands that we have our
music collected in CDs or contained in MP3 players, and
whatever other miracles I’m not aware of. But these seem
to lack the allure of vinyl circles in artistically designed

cardboard jackets. Loose leaves of paper, some resting on
the desk top, most in tumbling stacks on the shelves, all
of them scratched with absurdities, each of which I’ve
renamed ‘poem.’ I pattern my untidiness after nature: the
way leaves fall from trees in autumn, seashells uncaringly
tossed on a beach, stars blinking in the night sky, never in

neat rows and columns… What was I saying? Oh, my improper
housekeeping, my carelessly kept treasures. When I’m dead,
these will be gathered, tossed into a pit, and burned.
The smoke, the ashes, the essence…the essence…will rise above
the rooftops, above the clouds, and in this spiritual ascension,
they’ll be with me again.

A wistful and wonderful reverie and I too used to possess much of the same, but the wife has other priorities concerning keepsakes, so the garage sales and Goodwill reaped my treasures, cheers!

Your poems echo laws of nature Laid down soft, at one with paper, Their flesh may burn and disappear But beg you leave their souls on here And when the sky seems fadedblue I'll click your name and read them through X x xx

with notebooks tossed here and there, pieces of paper laying on the floor crumpled at the trash can, ah this is how my poet house is decorated. Pens stuck behind my ears always losing them, grabbing another, yet to find them while i searching for a crumpled piece of paper, with my hearts notes scribbled upon it. This describes my house perfectly. Thank you Faded for sharing this with us.. Scholar

All i can say (since i am stunned to the absence of words) is that this indeed is a fine peculiar selection of literature and i am honored to have read this. Thank you

I still have several vinyl records, but no means to play them anymore. Sometimes, I just like to look at the cover artwork on the sleeves of those classic records every now and then. Very nostalgiac. Excellent piece.

This was beautiful. I loved your comparison to keeping your house as the leaves and shells scattered on a beach. If I didn't live with someone who was OCD i'd probably do the same. "Messy/Unorganized" isn't dirty... xoxo great piece.

Vinyl has made a comeback, I wonder if its the romantic side of music or our natural need to be defiant. Maybe both... Your work also has that romantic classy feel. The idea of having it burned to be set free from this world to travel to the next with you, its creator is also romantic, though it would be a terrible loss for those left behind - XXOO Scholar

So much to look at, so much to sift through. i'm too young to know the allure of vinyl. Too technologized to understand the feel of each scribbled paper and the stains that reside on bent corners marking the spaghetti meal that came with a particular poem. Books are made for leaning and houses made for marking in your own way. God i hope no one burns all your works, Blues, it all deserves to live. Thanks for taking us on a tour. Scholar
