plain girl
By FadedBlues
he’s not the reason I breathe; he’s the reason the
breath of me should be stricken from my lungs.
that man. that man that was never a man, but a
vulture circling, waiting to descend on a plain girl
like me, languishing on the barren road of loneliness,
desperate for any touch.
desperate to hear the lies spoken quickly and easily:
‘you’re pretty.’ you see, we take those lies, and we
weave them into a string of pearls to wear around
our necks, because it’s the only beauty we’ll ever have.
so you work for him, you clean his rooms, you cook his
meals. and one day, the food is too cold, or the beer’s
too warm, and he needs to hit something, and of course
it’s your fault, so he hits you…
some nights, he kisses my shoulder. he comes like a
gentle petitioner to the harbor between my thighs, and
my tarnished grail is momentarily golden. he uplifts me;
and that is my downfall.
if I could leave this place, if I could walk away from
the sparse and precious moments of tenderness,
I would eat my own heart.

Your poem is very eloquent and it's impossible to read through it without having your feelings moved in some way. Very good

The conflict is blatantly evident in this and oh how well I empathize...lovely suffering.

I say, don't tolerate a man like that...women deserve better. Nicely written, very nicely worded. Makes me hate the bastard in your narrative. 10

"He uplifts me, and that is my downfall". . . This poem conjures such vivid emotions; I really love the internal battle between connection/attachment and destruction/preservation.

" that man. that man that was never a man, but a vulture circling, waiting to descend on a plain girl"____Doesn't get any better then that. The subject's headlong rush at being accusatory. held me to dote awhile to lick your imagery from my fingers...Hells yeahhhhhhh

I absolutely love this poem. I can 'feel' your aching heart in your words, and I can also relate, unfortunately. I love the last stanza: "if I could leave this place, if I could walk away from the sparse and precious moments of tenderness,I would eat my own heart." WOW!

Friends, thanks. St. Rita of Cascia is the patron saint of abused women, she herself was one. she provided me with interesting research...

naturally beautiful... plainly some men don't deserve such tenderness. :)~ Much loved this slice of reality ~^_^~

there is lust and desire, a tenderness and longing within the word 'plain'... it can speak in so many different beauties... but yet in the end aren't we all looking for that one... that one thing no matter how simple or plain it maybe to make our life complete...

Gut wrenching, really. The way you write from a woman's POV... I know you would have told her too that the problem started when she thought herself "plain"-

Much enjoyed FB - every time I'd write something like this my wife would tell me I'm channeling Hillary Clinton! Nevertheless like the old song"If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife..."Cheers!
