Children And Monsters In The Night

By Malcholm Dark

Why do our children cringe at night?

A moving shadow on the wall
A creak or scratch heard in the hall.
Unnatural things bump the night
Unnatural things taking flight!

Why do our children cry at night?

Perhaps it was just a vampire
Or a werewolf with eyes of fire.
Now watch the dead as they arise
Shadows are monsters in disguise!

Why do monsters come out at night?

Their hunt for virgin flesh, so true
Ask the children and they'll tell you...
"Torn to pieces and bloody screams
They steal away our lucid dreams!"

Why do we tell tales of the night?

Let's frighten the children for the good
To make them do the things they should.
If urban legends are based on truth
Why then release them on our youth?
.
.
.
.
.
One, two ...they're coming for you
Three, four ...better lock the door
Five, six ...grab a crucifix
Seven, eight ...you capitulate
Nine, ten ...it's a lie again.

To carry-on a bit further: when we lived in trees and caves, the night time was when the beasties were on the prowl. This put us at a disadvantage because of out poor night vision (not enough rods or cones I think). The burning question then was "where are the lions?" - just laughed at my typo = "loins?".

Reminiscent of "Little Orphan Annie" by James Whitcomb Riley - that was composed to scare the crap out of kids and it did give one the shivers I must admit. Something in our DNA that loves a good fright.

I was never taught fear as a child and don't plan on teaching it to my own. I've seen many other people loaded up with fear and thank my parents for helping me think outside that box. Fear in paranormal and such is just a waste of thought as far as im concerned.

Ah urban legends, from werewolves, to vampires, tho the bogeyman, always a new creature lurking in the dark. Another monstrous life lesson looking for a midnight snack. These stories either taught children to behave, or look over their shoulders for the rest of their lives lol. Another well crafted piece, write on. Scholar
