Autumn (In My Heart)

By darkness falls

The sky is the impossible blue of early summer
The air is soft and sweet with the smell of cut grass
A mild breeze gently twirls the leaves on the apple trees
But it's autumn in my heart...

The quiet is broken by the sound of birdsong
I can hear the laughter of children playing down the street
Carried along with the drone of a distant lawnmower
But it's autumn in my heart...

I can smell the tantalizing aroma of barbecue drifting in the air
And an old Journey song plays from an open window
Lawn sprinklers make thier quiet swish-swish
But it's autumn in my heart...

Inside, a cold wind blows, the skies are full of clouds
And russet-colored leaves fall to the ground, endlessly
The air holds the hint of frost, and woodsmoke slowly drifts
It's autumn in my heart...

Soon this will give way, the days will grow so short
The endless nights will become a wide-awake ordeal
The pain in these bones will become a thing alive
To match the pain in my soul, and the heaviness of my heart

A layer of ice will encase all, and frost will gild the shadows
A forbidding no-mans-land of unforgiving cold descending
This lonesome wistfulness will become a deep, dark, sadness
But for now, it's autumn in my heart...

Author's Note:

This is how I always seem to feel, either autumn (better), or winter (worse). but the better isn't good, and the worse is really bad. Spring and summer, it seems, don't exist anymore in my world...
