"Goth"

By Ladyhawke

"Goths are hard core romantics,
dreamy realists and cynical idealists.
They find beauty in the macabre,
while seeking fairness and tenderness
in our daily lives.
They love all things ancient,
while being modern and liberal in our social outlook.
They're intelligent and creative
without being cut throat and competitive.
They're angry yet peaceful.
They're sure of themselves, yet wary of strangers.
They're funny but bitter. . . .
but mostly very shy." -Anonymous

Behind wounded hearts they view the world
They once knew, now so evil, so crumbling, so cold
They think maybe they could see some good
Behind shaded eyes painted black and bold

I am in debt to these magnificent beings
I bid you honor, and respect and due
These crying souls are the most haunted
But carry such love....such passion, they do

They have a passion for life I admire
They have a tenderness for love I crave
Words to define these dark souls:
Passionate. . . Romanitc. . . Brave

I once had the opportunity to work closely and tightly with those labeled as 'Goth'. They were some of the best people I have ever dealt with. The opening comment, the definition of goths, shall we say, is not mine. I do not claim it. It was told to me by one in said company.
These are not to be confused with the everyday, "let me paint my nails black and shave my head so i can look cool" kids we see so prevelent. These are the real Goth. And to these, Goth is not just about painting your nails black and wearing black clothing. It's a real way of life. It's a brotherhood.
I have never met a more passionate, more romantic, more intelligent people before. They deserve all our respect, or at least our recognition. Don't write them all off as your everyday punks. These are a people like I have ever seen before.
I treasure my memories with them.

This is truly a deep look into people and am astonished at the depths at which you convey. You have an intelligence unlike the mindless-sheep that populate this planet. Glad to have you as a friend & even more glad I'm able to read this piece. Very inquisitive insight and well done. Keep up this kind of thinking & writing!

I'm realizing after reading your informative descriptions that I have been Gothic since I was 13, a lucky age wouldn't you say. But I never was marked by appearance, I just and still do prefer dark clothing. My mother use to tell me that dark clothing brings on depression. I told her to me dark clothing being the reflection of my soul makes me feel solid not brittle. I've worn the black paint and masscara under my face, behind my black skin. Thank you It is a pleasure to meet someone who sees us for what we truly stand for.

Thank you. I was hoping to get responses from more goths. Hoped they would give me insight into how I accomplished this work. A people that are so close to my heart and soul, I ache to do right by them, give them even a little justice in the cruel world. Thank you for your feedback. Much appreciated bro.

Beautiful and touching. I have a few "Goth" girls that work for me in my department and I love them to no end. Wouldn't trade them for anything. Sweet tribute. Maybe people should just talk to them and find out what they are about before they pass judgement.

Thanks for the nice tribute LH. Does the same go for the guys too I'd guess? Nice write and a fine perspective on some misunderstood souls for sure, thanks.

  • A former member wrote: This should be a thesis. "Goth: An aesthetic explanation to an aesthetic notion". Brava!

  • A former member wrote: This demarcates between the Goths and wannabe punks. I’ve never met one, but now, frankly I want to. They sound, um, nice people. Wait a minute, is this about you as well? Are you a Goth Lady? :p Enjoyed the pen portrait of a Goth. Thank you, at least now I have read a goth if not known someone personally.

I wanted to be, but then realized I have neither the fortitidue, neither the amount of self-pride and just....passion to be one. I am one at heart though. I am not one myself, but I give my all out support to those of whom are. They dubbed me Goth of their Highest Regards though. I love them to death. They will always hold my heart.
