the moment (you were born for)

By FadedBlues

This happened in 1967, in the army, in Georgia.
On Saturday nights, if I wasn't on duty, I'd go
to the USO club in town, along with 100,
maybe 200 other guys

There was a girl there that everybody, I mean
everybody, wanted to dance with. She might
have been the only girl in the room, maybe in
the whole world.

She was tall, short brown hair, I think they called
it a pixie hairdo. She wore a mini-dress, the
kind that was just coming into fashion at
the time.

She was as cute as............  Okay, think of
the cutest thing you can think of...
Got it?  She was cuter than that.
And her earrings; a small wooden ball on a

string that dangled from each ear. They
danced crazy when she danced. When the
music started, every guy there tried to be
the first one to her chair.

I never, ever, got a dance with her.
200 guys faster than me. So I'd sit
and watch her dance, and color in
my dream for the night.

Once during a dance, her earring fell off. She
took the other one off and walked over to me.
To Me.....
I held out my hand, and she placed the earrings

in my palm. After the dance, she came over
and got them.
She didn't say a word...I didn't say a word.
That was it.

A different kind of silent romance - brief, fleeting yet filled with meaning. Love it.

What an absolutely gorgeous "singular moment in time" this poem is. The language is so accessible, the setting familiar enough to "click" with most of us...and the wistfulness palpable. Very nice write :-)

There is always one moment in time that stands out when everything else is forgotten... a touch, a kiss, a glance sent your way, softly spoken words in the throws of passion... everything comes together in that one moment and you realize that is what you were born for... Scholar

So you were right, I absolutely loved this. I want to put how it made me feel into words but the adjectives I'm looking for keep evading me. Thanks for the suggestion, I enjoyed this so very much.

I hadn't realized that I was holding my breath until after the poem ended. This took my breath away. To adore another from afar.. There is nothing like it. You never got to dance with the girl but you got a small part of her which is more than enough. She trusted you, above anyone else in the room, with her earrings. Beautiful.

A very nice write. It's kind of romantic in a torturing and ironic way. Very sad you never got to dance with the girl...Thanks for sharing.

Holy smokes! That's a whole lot of cute to be contained in one girl! It must of been a way for the universe to re-balance itself; make one girl super cute to save mankind! I loved this, thanks for sharing it.

NikesRain, thanks...I was 19 & too immature to rationalize it, but it's still my most cherished memory...
