the sentinel
By freudian-slip
More than a guardian
he stands the infinite watch
over her heart
while he racks up hours
without sleep
offering meaningful resolution
of her confused
endless needs
Minding selflessly
for the one he loves
is terminally ill
without self esteem
or innate trust
the beast of burden
evidently
once again
is certain
he undoubtedly
will give her up
never mind his brazen
rock solid
dedication
he has the intestinal fortitude
of a soldier
fearless determination
and the distant
internal knowledge
that war ends only
when enough blood is shed
and the other side
is too tired
or broken

Eloquent piece. I am especially fond of the second stanza--it could stand on it's own.
