Our City Of Light... An Ode To Jim Morrison

By Malcholm Dark

From a cactus top, the pod I took
A sour fruit eaten, o how I shook
I took to remembering my days of long ago past
When the arms of the beast overcame me at last...
I was off to find Jim!

I was sailing the airways on wing-ed flight
When the stars spun away in a cascade of light
Spiraling forever into oblivion, a perilous plight
Till nothing remained but the blackness of sight...
On my journey to find Jim!

The pool of ebony gave-way and I was in the city
Permeated by the derelicts of pain and pity
Down a shadow shrouded alley in a mired neighborhood
To a darkened specter, upon a corner stood...
The semblance of Jim!

He then beckoned me
Across his arid sea
To a time when he
Once sought to be free...
I stood in awe of Jim!

Leather pants and boots, his long tangled hair
With a bearded face and weary-eyed stare
Then an echo of light, Jim envisioned his task
A cry of bewilderment, soured wine in the cask...
"And so..." began Jim!

"I have pondered many times, then many times more
People descend into the wound of the festering sore
Into the mouth of the city, the teeth of the night...
What has become of our city of light?

The howl of metamorphose, a change for the worse
Our secular revolution betrayed, the ageless curse
As the tears from generations have clouded the night...
I ask, what has become of our city of light?

A sea of ignorance entices the horror of your ways
A ticking clock counts down the end to your days
Who shall save our city and possibly die
Turn from the truth and face the lie...
The lie, the lie, the lie?"

A glowing warmth which the morning sun brings
Has awakened me to the music a bluebird sings
The clouds of my abyss departs a furied sky
With them goes also, 'a rider on the storm...'
Once more Jim, good-bye!
