Dull Knife
By midnights voice
Upon the Plains
The buffalo range
The Northern Cheyenne
call it their home
The winds blows free
Across the tallgrass prairie
From the Osage to
Manitoba
The winters are bleak
The summers were sweet
They followed the tatanka
Wherever they would go
For there was life
In the beasts and wildlife
They rode the big dogs
Hunted with the bow , arrow and knife
And brave were the warriors
Who the white man they resisted
And Dull Knife
was bravest of all
He once killed a bear
With no more than a knife
And was wounded
Many times in the wars
He was given the name
Of Dull Knife
When his knife wouldn't
Penetrate a shield
So he overcame his foe
with only bare hands
And the warriors
called him Dull Knife
He resisted to the end
Even though he couldn't win
Morning Star was his
Real given name
So when you look to the east
Over the ghosts of the beasts
Of what prairie
That there remains
Maybe you will catch
Just a glimpse in your eye
Of a fleeting
Morning Star
Tatanka - Indian for buffalo
Big Dogs - Indians have no word for horse in
any of their language . So they called horses
big dogs

Always a plus to learn something new MV, and Indian lore is sadly deficient in our literature; excepting Longfellow's Hiawatha and a few others. Cheers my friend! - Dan
