Only If Only

By Loneal

If only swords could kill the words
That anger rides in stealth
Then maybe pain would never be
And maybe peace could share its wealth

But only if it could

If only calm were waking seas
That feeling sails and thoughts make rough
Then maybe hurt would never be
And maybe joy could be enough

But only if it could

But these things are not that simple
So say the self-told lies
The things we have and have not said
Are locked away inside our eyes

If only rage could burn the words
That can’t be taken back
Then maybe doubts would never be
And maybe truth could be enough

But only if it could

If only love could soothe the seas
That roil torrid currents deep
Then maybe hate would never be
And maybe peace could be enough

But only - if only - it would.
