Aphrodite's Punishment

By Kali Ma

I never thought I would fall in love,
and I tried my best to fight the feeling.
And when it finally struck me down
like an arrow in the side
stinging and cutting and winning,
It stole away my reason.
For Aphrodite is not to be scorned,
for she will teach humility,
and grudging respect by punishing readily
those who harden their hearts to love.
She will let Cupid's arrows fly
and strike the hearts of those who defy
and they shall fall like all the rest
though they may try and fight the conquest;
a goddess is not one to contend with.
And so I caught the arrow of love,
and fell for a stunning boy
who stole my breath and quickened my heart
and taught me the futility of trying to thwart
what fate and the gods decide upon.
