Between Us Lays a Minefield
By lordshadow
Between us lays a minefield
I'm careful where I walk
You stand there staring back at me
But I only wish to talk
With every step a spoken word
Attempts to minimize
The distance put between two friends
Between two sets of eyes
The first one, mine, so full of hope
That I can help you heal
The other, yours, so full of pain
I never want to feel
Footprints left, impressions made
And still your face so cold
I shout your name, you won't respond
This is growing old
I take my time; can't walk too fast
And careful where I tread
For every pace could be my last
And then we'll both be dead
So close, now, I want to run
Instead, my hand extends
Just inches, now, away and then
So suddenly it ends
A lukewarm grin, a single tear
A bittersweet embrace
A single step, a single word
To take us from this place
Before we left, I heard you say
With a single sorry sigh
As you wrapped your arms around me tight
And simply said, "goodbye."

Whoa. The flow, the rhythm, the words... this is stunning. And I'd have never found it if not for the Random button.
