A Hard Bargain

By BrideToAgony

As I lay in bed
A shadow creeps past my feet
Dark thoughts swarm my head
Black shape takes a seat

My heart pumps so fast
Blurry figure starts to focus
The painful awareness of malevolence it casts. . .
Consuming red eyes, plague me more than any locust

          I SEE
Two blood thirsty eyes
      they illuminate the night
Horns as twisted gnarled roots
ready to aid shall it come to a fight
A hairy chest heave long sighs
      breaths shallow and low
Skin black as soot
wet with blood or perspiration? I'll never know

          I HEAR
The whispering of my name
      a sound I cannot face
A fluttering I cannot tame
      My heartbeat's quickened pace
A mocking ever so faint
that sound, oh it is taunting
A silence imbued with a devilish taint
      that empty nothingness, so haunting

        I FEEL
The hotness of breath
      not my own
The bleakness of my coming death
a pulsing sensation indicating the time has passed to atone
A claw creeping toward my covers
bringing with it the trepidation of my defeat
A chill in my room, how it hovers
      Replacing all body heat

Why can't I move, run
Or even scream
Fear has taken me, my end has come
Please... Please tell me this is some abysmal dream

Alas, I know it not to be true
I have been dreading this night
For near a decade and half, going on two
It was inevitable, now there's nothing I can do
I see the end of my tunnel, void of light

He gave me eighteen years
He granted me a new beginning
But now I am left only with tears
His face contorted to a malicious grinning

That black, clawed hand
Slithering under my sheet
And up past my feet
Clutching at my palm

A gasp escapes my lips
Triumphant snarl from his
Claws release and continue up past my hips
They keep reaching only to slow at my ribs

Easing ever so gently
To halt upon my breast
My heart beats more slowly
No longer felt in my chest

My life suspends from a string
Strands twirling undone
I shift into his being
My soul weightless, but body a ton

My world is pitch black
Disappeared has the feel of his hand
There is no going back
My hour glass just ran out of sand

My sight is no longer the only thing missing
My smell, my taste, my touch all numb
Gone is my hearing
It's time to succumb

My fear is fading
I've accepted my fate
His hunger is sating
He seized a new eternal mate

My soul
His soul
Their souls
Legion has molded from many singles
For he is collecting his toll
And I am forever trapped in him now forced to mingle

With all the others who've been swallowed less than     whole
Foolish were we to test our mettle
We who tried to fill our hollows
With the bargains of a devil

If we thought he'd forget to collect
We were regrettably incorrect

Eighteen years
Serene, nice
Now only tears
Bought with fear
Satisfy the ultimate price
