Modern day musician
By Joey
(preface of past)
I play the guitar's barb wire strings until my fingers bleed dry.
I strum the chords, that come from my soul, until nothing is left but loveless
ash of it.
I perform a solo on the devil's time, giving my mortality to perform.
I use electricity as a tool, and make it operate my instrument.
...like some slave.
I command it like an iron maiden commands it's capture, and crush.
(Current)
I play for the money, and not for the soul.
I'd rather rip my fans wallet's, then let my bloodied work touch their
souls.
The first paragraph you read, is no longer my kind.
For I'm a modern day musician.
A rose in only for it's beauty, and a gun only in for the money it takes
with no art.
For I'm a modern day musician.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said "Selling out is the new keeping it real". Have hope though there is a great scene of people in many genres still making music for the music. Nice job :)

Here it is! Scream this into every American Idol fuckers face with dire hatred and angst ridden breath of your soul. Brilliant!

I think any musician is caught in a catch 22 - The need to express contrasted with the resources to fund that expression. Love the writting though - beautifully expressed

I agree with Alanarchy in the fact that its a generalization. i sing for the music, for myself. it comes from deep inside my soul. im working incredibley hard to make music im not making shit from, so i guess we are not all modern day musicians. good thing, huh?

Well expressed. But kind of a generalization. Real musicians exist, some are even mainstream, and they got to be mainstream by working hard, and playing good music. If you only knew what it takes, hard work for little pay, months on the road away from loved ones, starting out playing gigs in shitty bars, for a group of maybe thirteen people, all for enough gas to make it to the next club. The next show, and if you're lucky, maybe there you'll have fourteen drunks to watch you play. I know some fans hate seeing their favorite mom and pop band go big. It feels like their not "just yours" anymore. But if you enjoyed the music, wouldn't you want them to be successful? I mean, so they can keep at it? I know, some groups loose focuse, or pander to labels that want the band to water down, or play to only a certain demographic. But the Modern day musician is still very much alive and well. And I love what he does. So I say, pay the man so he can keep doing it. If I could make a living from just my music, you bet your ass, I'd never touch another hand cart again.
