The Federal Republic vs the People's Republic

By AdrianJ

A funky celestial cataclysm strikes the vulgar, abundant provincial interior of a totalitarian state.
Immolation, Abrogation, Decimation make their rounds against fabrications of the prostrate population.
Oh, what cruelties of fate.

The overindulged American aristocracy took the lead -
They don't have a creed. - they subjugate those who need - democracy!
The various "Christian" congregations made their declarations
Heathens! God had his reasons!

Poor bastard plebeians (unbaptized in the the church you know) all, too enthralled by ballyhoo, dispensed with the bullshit and set about what they had to do. They rolled-up their sleeves, and got off their knees.
Untutored in spin, they proceeded to dig in - and assist fellow citizen. Unearthing rubble to find the as yet uncrushed - this is what was rushed.
Rushing those clinging to life to the infirmary mourning the tiny dead souls gone to eternity.

An hour and a half later, a Premier was on the scene - a politician can't do much but it did raise self-esteem.

A torrent strikes another nation. With coastal town known for a long pulchritudinous reputation. It is commonly understood to be a a city of prostitutes and drinks and a few too many black cheeks.
The ocean, tripped and fell into the land, overwhelming an over-funded but inadequate levee system demand.
Much-vaunted American know-how somehow enabled 80% of the "Big Easy" to be submerged - not such a small feat for a country known for "the Surge"

The birthplace of Jazz, one of the top ten visited cities in the country - bloated corpses turned it into a different kind of funky.

Sometimes God doesn't need a reason - "sometimes he's just a teasin"

There were no Cheney's, there were no Bushes - the was the mayor of the 24th largest city in the nation, Nagin, on CNN beggin'...
But no word yet from the nation's top men. They had more important things to do then. Like making strategic decisions about how best to kill their brothers who worshipped the same God and occupying their land.
And of course, the next day we had to commemorate a 60 year anniversary of the atomic annihilation of Japan.

Bush was unaware, after all, wasn't Mardi Gras over? 'you mean to tell me the 5th most popular tourist destination in the US just blew over?

The day after that, Bush on Air Force one overflew - because no terrorist attack can be launched from a flooded, derelict city, a senior defense department source stated privately he knew.

One day, Two Day, Three - what were the people to do who couldn't flee? The looted, they stole, the went and prayed on bended knee.

We had a category 3 they had a category 8 - but how does one compare a wake with a quake? Is this something a religious leader should uptake? We knew what was going to happen two days before, could that information, could that have done more?

The flat-earth society wins again - yet another accomplishment in the counting of the angels who can dance on the head of a pin...

Those poor bastard plebeians had long given up on their government. (remember, they ARE bastards - none of the parents were married in the church)
Pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and dug in - helping their fellow man in trouble was something deep within (do they have souls?)
Doesn't that sound just a little bit like Republican Conservatism?

1.5 billion USD from one peasant to another. They turned off the commercials, stopped watching the shows, and mourned the victims of fates cruel throes.
$654 million was given to the greatest empire on earth - not by it's citizens, but by its fans...That and the disaster itself was not enough to get mention in the State of the Union address by the people's highest man.
I must be fair, 10.7 billion USD was spent, but where were the people's shelter - inside an over-sized sports tent. And let's not mention how FEMA paid the rent.

They had the PRC, we had FEMA, if I had to take bets (or a wager) I would've said we would show them who's major. We're Americans! We always work it out!
But FEMA needed to count - it commandeered supplies, redirected aid and made sure everyone did equally without.

Each according to his need, each according to his ability - I think that's what started the looting of the facilities.

People in Maine needed ice right away - that's a constitutional right - the president did another photo-op flight.

No rushing people, we must demur! Emergency supply decisions must be concurred. They were confiscated, they must be properly checked for - we're not quite sure.
Doctors were put on emergency mop duty - bureaucrats afraid that some mistakes would be made and insurance payouts to survivors would have to be paid. "Remember, floors don't sue - people do"

Our nation can take some refuge that we take sports seriously. The Convention Center was built to withstand intact. But after 3 days of no food water or sanitation, it was putrid and wracked. What were people expected to do? The head of FEMA said of the "refugees" their actual location? The government had no clue.

We have stealth bombers that can watch an Arab from a thousand miles a way pick his tooth with a splinter, but somehow we cannot find the Erneal Memorial Convention Center?

Looters were warned they would be shot. By US government troops fresh back from Iraq. Something like this happened somewhere else in 1989 with troops - can't really put my thumb on it, but it wasn't over food, water, shelter, clean living conditions - there was a tank I know...But then again, I could be wrong - after all, I am a product of the American educational system - but I wasn't for very long.

In the end, it was time for blame was overdue. Congress named "the government" (but Congress, isn't that you?) and it was the city's fault for getting flooded in the first place - let's not make this a federal case.
9/11 was solemnly mentioned because we need more lines in the Patriotism Act in the constitution for the next terrorist could be divine. (now we definitely cannot allow funding for the star wars project to be left behind!)

China blamed bad construction and recorded the damage to see. But criticism was suppressed. No surprise to me.
Ironically, the US Defense Department refused to let the damage be recorded. The indignity of "really dead" people on television could not be afforded.

We simply changed the channel to watch another show, this one's a little "too real" to sell an iPod commercial.
Besides, the government has our back, heck we spend enough on it, let it pick up the slack.

This is not to say that one system is better or one is inferior. But they're both made up of the people they serve.

Is it not true then that don't the people get the government they deserve?

This is definitely a favorite. Thank You. ~Downstream~
