That's impossible

By daiglepoems

Each and every year
I spent my summers in Montana.
Big Sky Country.
I loved Montana.

The first thing the relatives wanted to know was what I was going to be when I grew up.

"I want to be a gorilla"

HaHaHa.
You can't be a gorilla.
That's impossible.

Perhaps I was too young to understand the signifigance of the question.
At least I had another year to consider my options.

The following year the ritual was repeated.

"So Marty,  What do you want to be when you grow up?

"I want to be a helicopter."

HaHaHa.
You can't be a helicopter.
That's impossible.

As I grew older my responses matured.

"So Marty.  What do you want to be when you grow up?"

"I want to be president."

HaHaHa.
The odds of being president are like 250,000,000 to one.
You can't be president.
That's impossible.

"So Marty.  What do you want to be when you grow up?"

"I want to be a Dodger.  Like Sandy Koufax."

HaHaHa.
You can't be like Sandy Koufax.
He's the greatest of all time.
That's impossible.

I considered all of the valuable advice my relatives had given.
After weighing my options I had finally decided what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I was prepared for the ritual.

"So Marty.  Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?"

"I'm not going to be anything at all.

HaHaHa.
You can't be nothing at all.
Everybody has to be something.
That's impossible.

But my mind was made up.
I was committed.
From that day on I have never done anything.
Gone anywhere.
Met anyone.
And though I may have enjoyed swinging in a tree.
Or falling from the sky.
Or being the most powerful man in the world.
Or becoming the greatest lefthander the world had ever seen.
I must admit.
I have derived great satisfaction in finally proving.
Once and for all.
That not even nothing is impossible.

It's not too late to accomplish whatever you'd want to. Never mind the mocking; in fact, overcome it. Prove them wrong, Marti!

I mean, Marty. Sorry for the typo. Don't you look back, you can never look back!
