The Ecru Room

By cadymae

The neat corner held her whole world
She had a window too

Her little mute friend
always swept his way to her corner
and watched her view with her a while

He push-broomed away again with a small smile

Her fresh hopeful blank future endeared her to him
in a way his children had out-grown
and his wife had never been

She hummed a small tune
tucking her dolly next to her thigh

averting her eyes from the maze of her gown's print
she glanced at the prayer-card and said "Good night."
