Do Not Be So Edible

By WoundsLikeStars

In the belly of the whale, Jonah found forgiveness

In the belly of a metaphor, I have found suggestive juices

Life cannot swallow what is not offered as food

Do not live on that self-made fork, you morsel of flesh

Instead, choose to swim in rancid soup

The world will not go near your shallow bowl

Keep among the crackers, keep salt in your eyes

Dance among the carrots and molded potatoes

There is nothing appetizing about the one who moves

Whose purpose is elusive flavor and wind

Nothing is so edible as a man marinated in apathy

A woman, lightly dusted with self-inflicted doubt

Your scars, your pain, they are not for soaking

They are to be cherished and beautifully bland

If you do not wish to be digested by this world

Do not let yourself be so deliciously ordinary

This reminded me of that scene with Chris Farley in Dirty Work. "They say in the land of bats, the one-eyed man is king. Well, in the land of skunks, the man with half a nose is king!"
