At a Loss

By Ocean of Truth

And so it's this that you want...
Just a way to release
You've been bashing on the door
For days
Even though it's open
Free finally to go to the world

And yet you only stare at the door
Unable to grasp the handle
(or anything else it seems)

All the while people glance
Some stare at the complete incompetence
With pity, and some loathing

Two in particular have seemed to take special interest
One who whispered through the door
Hoping his endearments would be heard

The other sat behind, tears growing in the corners of his eyes
He knew that trying too hard to keep her would only make it worse
Had hoped beyond hope that the cold stare would fade
The one that you see in a wild animal that has lost the ability to roam
                                                                                as nature intended

Maybe this one was meant to be free
Wandering upon this cozy campsite
With everything she would ever need, it seemed

But it would never BE enough

How can you give what you don't have?

Finally, he stands from his place behind her...
Long forgotten who he was
Neither knew anymore

All he knew was that it was time...

Time to rid himself of this terrible situation...

Every night he would wake from his sound sleep
Only to hear clawing at the door
With just a faint voice echoing each drag

She was gone from him...
No longer a connection, but a gap
Now it felt more like a gorge

So on this night he shall open the door
Allowing her to run free in the night
And she surged past the faint-voiced phantom

Quickly he grasped the phantom,
Sure to drag him into the light, to atone for his sins

Only to realize it was his face he stared into
Aged and shadowed, nonetheless it was him

Lost and confused there was only one thing left to do

Strangle the life from the one responsible

Even if it meant no future for himself

The two men are one and the same, the phantom is just a different part of the man, a part that he has no control over and seems to have its own agenda. Fate is a funny thing...
