Letter to my child
By DIATRICUS
Hello to my dearest one, who
never came to be, but, let me
tell
you what I longed for
Full of strength and subtle wisdom
playful, and yet, calm with wonder
teaching me to be a
Better Man
Now and then, you'd fall
away, from
me, though knowing full-well, my
loving arms would
catch you
Twenty-two or twenty three, I
figure that's
the age you'd be
had you ever been, I'd
...be a
Better Man

A prisoner on Robin Island (many, many years after his release) said that the worst thing about it had been the lack of children. When he first held a child after his release he was so moved he couldn't speak. This reminds me of that a little, the way children can somehow spark something pure and happy, and their absence makes for a sorry existence. it always kills me a little when people tell me how old their loved ones would be if they were still alive.
