Smoke from Yesterday's Candle

By monalisamarie

As humans, we never need be alone
But there’s no one on this street tonight
But maybe I’m behind me
My hope deserts me, like a candle down to a stub
But the wax did not leave it just rearranged
Oh, sweetheart, if you’re ready to forgive me
I think I can forgive you again
This endless tirade, “I love you!”
If you say it one more time I’ll cut out your tongue
Back to alone
Did I ever leave?
(Can loneliness get lonely if I leave her in the rain?)
It might be cold but its better out here
Where at least you can’t tell it’s not rain, but tears
A warm hand takes mine
I look in surprise
A perfect stranger has extended his hand to me
And I…
I was never mine
