Self Importance

There is a saying
people toss out.
rather thoughtlessly
and all too often,
to the effect
that everything happens
for a reason.

It seems to me
unfortunate,
a notion such as this,
gets bandied about
as proof
that whatever happens
is God's will,

not because
there's nothing to learn
in the karmic forces
that spin us through
the universe,

but because
in it's believing,
that behind it all
lies intentionality,
there also resides
a rather unhelpful
sense of self
importance
to the effect
that God tutors me
while others perish.
