Eyes of Emeralds

By PaperPromises

Eyes of emeralds blaze like flames of fire
A heart made of stone collapsed to dust and ash
A cause to an effect which appears to be dire
Her life is before her in a vibrant flash.

She shuts her eyes as the images burn into her soul
She's cast outside in the rain, alone and cold
Swallowed up inside black remorse and tarred sorrow
She sketches a torn painting of a forgotten tomorrow.

A day too early but somehow also too late
She finds herself standing before an old, rusted gate
Rain morphs to tears as she ponders what lies ahead
Because she knows as of 10 minutes ago, she's now dead.

No way to turn back the hands of time
No longer in her favor, they waste away at her touch
Softly she hears a distant humming of a rhyme
Straining to listen but the distance is too much.

Only one way to know
As she reaches for the latch
Only one way to go
As she cannot go back.

The gate swings open revealing a darkness so deep
A sudden dread can be felt to still every heartbeat
She's thrust forward into the depths of Hell and strife
This is the price she pays for taking away her own life.
