Childhood Delights

By Anaelle

Laughter flitting through the air
Remember the sounds of
Childhood Delights?
Climbing the biggest tree possible
Scrapes, symbols of pride
And bruises to be shown off
Tumbling through the fallen leaves
Scolded because you're a wild child
Hunting forever for frogs
Gazing at the stars, like some giant mystery
Wondering about it all, before
You're distracted easily by tickling
Sharing smiles with your friends
And secrets you don't even remember now
Laughing over icecream
Stolen from your mother's freezer
Grass between your toes
Running barefoot down the field
Flying through sprinklers
Rain splashing on your nose
In turn, splashing in the mud
Dancing through the puddles
Scolded again - wild child
Wanting to play outside all the time
Even in the dead of winter
Coming back with pink noses
And chattering teeth
Though your heart is warm with laughter
Tumbling through the snow
Sliding across the cold ice
Shyly pinching a crush on the arm
And giggling with your friend
About how cute he is when he's angry
Being afraid of thunder
Crawling into bed with your parents
Capturing bugs and letting them die
Under your tender loving care
Scolded once more - learning responsibilities
Dreaming of candy and Christmas
And wanting to be a grown up
Remember all those secrets?
Shared, sitting outside at dusk
With your bestfriend
You promised you wouldn't lose
Another thing that's drifted away
Lost in the space of time
And all the mysteries of life
Faded with sweet Childhood delights
