the words i said in jest

By a restless wanderer

I might have sung a witty tune,
With a twinkle in my eye.
But, I didn’t know it’d cut so deep;
I didn’t know she’d cry.

The glowing face and luscious smile
I love and hoped to see
Was turned away and lost in pain
I never meant to be.

And now alone, I hear my words
And realize what I said.
The twinkle fades, my eyes are grey;
The tune had just gone dead.



and now I lie awake and stare at the ceiling
...and now I think
