Drowning

By DeificLightning

I feel the waves closing in,
The riptides beginning to win.
The air around me begins to fade,
And I’m pulled down into the gray.
Flailing blindly as the heaviness enfolds,
Searching desperately for answers unknown.
Trying so hard to stay afloat.
Up is down and down is up,
I can no longer tell them apart.
Vision fading as I sink,
Slowly pulled past the brink.
Thoughts float away with the bubbles,
A fleeting though carried away as my vision crumbles,
I fear I’m drowning.
I fear I’m drowning in the grey.
.
 .
.
 .
  And then I fade.
                              .
                             .
                              .
                             .
                              .

You did a nice job of describing the way that anxiety can latch on like a vice and just completely take over. Like there's a fist in your chest crushing out all of the oxygen. We become our own worst physiological nightmare. Well done!

Indeed. There is nothing worst than the feeling of a fist strangling and constricting your heart. Thank you for reading and commenting.

I've suffered from anxiety and depression for years. This is incredibly written, and can easily symbolize any particularly bad day. Great work, keep posting!

I’m glad I was able to word in it a way that makes it relatable. I believe I’ve been suffering from anxiety and depression my whole life, but I believe I’ve only just recognized it for what it is relatively recently. Thank you for reading and commenting though! As for the ‘keep posting’, I plan too :)

As a sufferer of depression/anxiety disorder, this really hit home for me. The metaphor of drowning in an unforgiving ocean borders much too closely on reality. This is amazing. Thank you for sharing. Bless!

I’m glad it was relatable. I’ve always felt like I was either trying desperately not to drown in an endless ocean or walking on thin ice that was cracking under my feet and crumbling away just behind me. I’ve had those analogies with me since elementary so it made sense to finally turn it into a poem. Thank you for reading and commenting.
