Hold my Hand
By Abbyernathie
Ten months old,
Tryin’ to take my first step.
I pull myself up,
But I fall back down.
I try again,
And you hold my hand.
My first day of school,
I’m a big kid now.
I try to look brave,
But I’m terrified.
You sense my fear,
And you hold my hand.
Wide eyed and grinning,
I’m staring at the keys.
You hand them to me,
But you look worried.
I say I’ll be fine,
And you hold my hand.
11:00 PM,
You're sitting there crying.
I ask what happened;
"A drunk driver hit you"
You say to me,
And you hold my hand.
"Will I be OK?"
I ask in shock.
"They say you won't make it"
You say through tears.
I start to cry,
And you hold my hand.
"Tell mom not to cry.
Tell my brother to
Never quit dreaming.
Tell my sister to
Reach for the stars"
And you hold my hand.
"Daddy, remember to
Cherish the little things.
I love you, Daddy."
I close my eyes,
And as I slip away,
You hold my hand.
