Desire

By DavidVale

There was a dream one summer night
hovering over a sleeping man
a wonderful illusion, weaved with desires
and so very lifelike it must have been real

There was not much, in that dream
a man, a woman and a beach with,
waves, crashing to the shore in the moonlight
and eerie music coming from the shadows

And they moved and they talked
and kissed and smiled and danced...
and were one, belonging to each other
and joint together with their souls

To see such beauty is to see one's demise
'cause no man can unsee the sight of her...
And men would walk willingly to their deaths
were she the one delivering it

Such were the man's thoughts
as he stood there basking, happy
and the one on his side, of his dreams
looked at him and wanted nothing else

But the man grew sad, for he knew
that happiness has fleeting legs
and he felt her slipping away
behind the veil, behind his dream

And so the night reached to its inevitable end
and the sea was filled with red-hot blaze
as the rising sun made the gray world burn
and with the world, the man burnt too

Of aching, of desperate longing
for the one of his dreams
who he knew was waiting him
just behind his mind's reach

Great poem. I love a visual poem. It's something that escapes my abilities. Inspiring. Thanks, JD

...nicely done. better to have a dream for a moment, rather than no dream at all (altho many would disagree)...

  • A former member wrote: Beautiful imagery. Very well written for your first poem. In a way it reminds me of Sirens in mythology. Beautiful but disastrous.

Oh what a dream to dream, "And with the world, the man burnt to" such a beautiful and sad line, to sacrifice all hope and possibility for the longing for that half remembered moment of perfection
